Erik G. Nelson, M.D.

Nelson-webDr. Nelson grew up in Pennsylvania.  He received a bachelors and masters degree in biochemistry and biophysics from the Pennsylvania State University. He subsequently studied pharmacology at the Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia and Washington University in St. Louis. He is a graduate of the Medical College of Pennsylvania and completed an internship in general surgery at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago.

Dr. Nelson trained in otolaryngology at the University of Chicago, which included a rotation performing ear surgery in Anchorage, Alaska and one year of pediatric specialization at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. He practiced in the Cincinnati area for seven years, while his wife, a physician also, fulfilled a Public Health Service commitment. Dr. Nelson and his family returned to the Chicago area in 1995. He has been practicing otolaryngology in Lake County for almost 20 years.

Dr. Nelson has been engaged in medical research of ear diseases in adults and children at the University of Chicago for 30 years, which has generated over 20 publications. He has also held a clinical appointment at the University of Chicago.

Dr. Nelson is board certified in Otolaryngology and in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  In addition he is a fellow member of several societies within the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, including the allergy, head and neck, otological, and rhinologic societies.  Fellow membership in these organizations requires expertise beyond routine board certification and the recognition of leaders in the field. Dr. Nelson served as president of the Lake County Medical Society in 2006 and continues to serve on its executive committee.

Dr. Nelson’s practice includes a broad range of ear, nose, and throat disorders. His special interests are the care of children, hearing problems, thyroid and neck surgery, and the treatment of sinus disease.
